How to buy a car in Florida without a Social Security Number
A step-by-step playbook for ITIN holders, recent arrivals, and undocumented buyers — written by an automotive engineer who has guided dozens of these purchases.
Buying a car in Florida without an SSN
If three dealerships have already told you "you need an SSN to finance," they were taking the easy way out. Florida lenders absolutely finance buyers with an ITIN — you just need to ask the right ones, in the right order, with the right paperwork.
Step 1 — Get an ITIN if you do not have one
File IRS Form W-7 with your tax return or a passport. Allow 6–8 weeks. Without ITIN, your only paths are cash or in-house "buy-here-pay-here" lots (avoid).
Step 2 — Build a thin credit file
Apply for a secured Capital One Quicksilver Secured or a Self credit-builder loan. Use them for 90 days before you walk into a dealer.
Step 3 — Pre-qualify with ITIN-friendly lenders
Three we have seen approve consistently in FL: NavyFed (if you qualify by family/military), Lendmark Financial, and Veros Credit. Get a written pre-approval before any dealer visit.
Step 4 — Walk in with the offer
The F&I office will try to "improve" your rate. If their APR is more than 1 point above your pre-approval, ask them to match — many will. If they refuse, leave.
Step 5 — Read the contract twice
"Out the door" must include taxes, fees, and the doc fee. Florida caps the doc fee at $999 — anything above is illegal. Add-ons (theft etch, GAP, appearance protection) are optional. Decline them.
